Sitting At The Big Kids Table

Today, Marc and I had the chance to sit down with a few sommeliers/wine directors from some of Seattle's best restaurants and talk about Purple Teeth Cellars. It was a very exciting opportunity for us because these folks are very well respected and were willing to give us their take on our wines in their spare time. We hosted Danielle Custer of TASTE, Nelson Daquip of Canlis, Chris Lara of Matt's in the Market, Jason Ramos of Salish Lodge, and Kristen Young of Waterfront Seafood Grill. As a bonus, Danielle's mother, Dolores, was still in town for Mother's Day and her perspective as a well-known food stylist was welcomed.

I'll admit that we were a bit nervous hosting such rock stars in the wine world at our house, but they could not have been more gracious if they tried. Seriously. They poked fun at each other and some of the nuances of the establishments they worked for.

After Nelson promised to make his fellow guests' cars appear magically in front of our house after the tasting, just like they do at Canlis, we were able to get down to tasting. But to see these people outside of their normal work environments was a treat. The camaraderie was obvious even though they all work for different restaurants.

We covered the basics, such as the history of Purple Teeth Cellars, how we decided to focus on Rhone varietals, why we chose the specific grape types that we did, and why we chose the vineyards that we source grapes from. The group all passed on advice that was very constructive. It was extremely cool and humbling to be around such great minds in the wine world with them talking about our pride and joy in such detail.

Best of all, they gave us feedback on our wines and how we are selling them. We poured the 2007 White Hawk Syrah, then the 2007 Alder Springs Syrah and finally, the 2006 Eaglepoint Ranch Petite Sirah. We're so proud to report that they were all really well received by everyone in attendance!!

Here are some snippets from today's roundtable:

  • '07 White Hawk Syrah –Thought a rich and fatty fish with some herbes de provence would make this a "killer" pairing. Fun reference was a "meal in a glass" and thought it would sell in the lounge "all day long". "Lots of versatility with this wine".
  • '07 Alder Springs Syrah –Consensus amongst the group that it had some "floral qualities" which made it more feminine, which was a nice contrast to the White Hawk. The group liked the suggestion of pairing with osso buco. Creamy polenta was also suggested as an option.
  • '06 Eaglepoint Ranch Petite Sirah – Some nods around the table when we discussed our short ribs pairing. The wine "grips you" and has a long finish. Also received kudos for not "hitting it over the head with oak/wood".

More to come, but special thanks to Danielle, Dolores, Nelson, Chris, Jason and Kristen for taking time from their hectic schedules to taste Purple Teeth Cellars. We learned a ton and look forward to keeping the dialogue going!
